Support Resources for Parents

Chat GPT – Seriously…

A useful resource – when we decided to cram History iGCSE to take it early in November I asked Chat GPT for a 10 week revision plan. I told it the exam board – the 4 topic areas she was learning and asked it for a plan. Evie also used it to ask her exam questions (again by putting in the exam board, and the subject area) she then got Chat GPT to mark her answers. We cross checked this learning with her History Teacher. She agreed it seemed to work well. It gave appropriate feedback. Evie also took photos from her text books and asked Chat GPT to make a fun revision game for her. She’s amazing! This is free right now too so get using it!

Dyslexia:

Charity, Helen Arkell provides excellent support information for parents and teachers. I attended some of their virtual courses on how to help your child at home, dyslexia workshops. You can find the latest list of courses here: Courses for parents | Helen Arkell

Exam Centres:

I can’t recommend highly enough faregos.org If you are lucky enough to live close enough, please look at the courses they offer. They are a not-for-profit organisation and offer incredibly low-cost tutoring, virtual and face-to-face lessons. Set up by a group of mums, they are just wonderful. They have guided us through a Travel and Tourism iGCSE. They also guided us through a Religious Studies GCSE. Both were taken in Year 10. We used them in November to sit for the History iGCSE half a year early. We will go back in Summer 2026 to finish off Evie’s exams. They helped us with exam access arrangements. Evie will get 25% extra time and can use a laptop for all her exams there.

I have had no communication with this centre yet – but I have done some searching for a northern non-profit exam centre and have managed to find this one. It is a Christian examination centre, so I appreciate it won’t suit everyone. But certainly worth a look into: Membership – Christian Education Deeside Exam Centre

Tutoring:

We’ve been using Tutorful for a long time. Their tutors vary in price level. You can filter by subject area and focus on those with SEN (Dyslexia for us) understanding. We use a tutor who is currently studying at University. She covers many subjects. For us, she helped Evie with Religious Studies, Maths, and Biology. Aleena N | Tutorful

Podcasts:

You can listen to Evie’s story here: From Cyber Bullying to Homeschooling: A Student’s Journey

Virtual Schools:

Home – UK Virtual School is the wonderful, flexible option we chose for Evie. They provide courses from Year 1 to GCSE level. Pricing does increase the more courses you choose. However, there are options for recorded learning sessions at a cheaper price.
